OBITUARY:
BOWERSOX 1ST POST IN SALEM
PIONEER MINISTER SENT FROM PENNSYLVANIA AS OREGON MISSIONARY IN 1870
The first Oregon ministry of the Rev. Josiah Bowersox, who died in Portland January 11 at the age of 91 years, three months and 19 days was in this city, and he was instrumental in bringing about the construction of the first Evangelical church edifice in Salem. Mr. Bowersox was first licensed to preach in 1861 and two years later was ordained by Bishop Long of the Evangelical church. He served churches in the Central Pennsylvania conference until 1870, when the board of missions appointed him missionary in Oregon.
He made the trip to Oregon and Salem, coming by way of Cape Horn in 1879.
Made Conference Head
For the six years following his arrival in Oregon he served with great success, at the end of which period the Pacific conference was organized and Mr. Bowersox elected superintendent of the conference, a position which he filled for 16 years, eight as superintendent of the Pacific conference and eight years after the Oregon conference was organized in 1884.
During the time he served as superintendent he laid the foundation for the Washington conference in eastern Washington, and following his superintendency he served various fields with great efficiency and full time service at each point. Oregon churches which he served included Salem, Albany, Corvallis, Dayton, Portland and Warren.
Four Children Survive
Children who survive Mr. Bowersox are Albert Bowersox of Albany, Dr. Frank Bowersox of Monmouth, Frank [Fred?] Bowersox, of Salem and Mrs. Adda Allen of Vancouver, Wash.
The funeral was held in the Willamette Blvd. Church in Portland Monday morning when the Revs. Lovell, C. P. Gates and H. H. Farnham spoke. At 2 o’clock services were held in the Evangelical church with the Revs. W. G. Kantner, and C. C. Polling, both pioneer associates of Mr. Bowersox in service, affiliated. His body was laid to rest in the Family plot in Odd Fellows cemetery, beside the mother of his children who preceded his death 34 years ago.
