1880 OR CENSUS - M. Brey, age 65, b. Hesse Cassel, occupation cabinet maker, is enumerated with wife Sophia, age 56, b. Bavaria, along with children Ernestina, age 25, b. Oregon, Geo. E., age 22, b. Oregon, occupation bookkeeper, and Clara, age 17, b. Oregon 
PROBATE -  File #1506 Moritz Brey Testate. He died 17 May 1894 in Salem. Sophia Brey and George Brey named co-executors on May 23, 1894. Heirs: Sophia Chance daughter age 51 of Portland; Phebe Warner daughter age 47 of Salem; Andrew C. Brey son age 41 of Oregon; George E. Brey son age 37 of Independence; William M. Brey son age 34 of San Francisco, California; Annestasia Brey daughter age 39 of Salem; Clara F. Brey daughter age 31 of Salem; and widow Sophia Brey age 71 of Salem.

OBITUARY: 
BREY - At the residence on the southwest corner of Cottage and Union streets, Salem, at 2:15 p.m., Thursday. May 17, 1894, Moritz Brey, aged 79 years. 
On Monday, the 7th, deceased was stricken with paralysis of the right side, the effects being first noticed early in the morning and in this condition he lingered until yesterday when death came to relieve him of his sufferings. 
Mr. Brey was born in Germany on April 14, 1815, and came across the Atlantic to the United States in 1834. In 1841 he and Sophia Veith were united in wedlock in the city of Peoria, Illinois. They concluded to come west in 1851 and arrived in Astoria that year. The next year they came to Salem and took up their residence on the property mentioned above where they have resided ever since -- over forty years. 
Mr. Brey was a member of the German Lutheran church but was not connected with any religious denomination in this city.  He was a member of the Masonic order having joined it in 1845 and he was also the oldest member of Salem lodge No. 4, A. F. & A. M. 
He was the father of ten children, those living being Mrs. Dr. Chance of Portland, Mrs. James Warner of Salem, Wm. M. Brey of San Francisco, George of Independence, and Ernestine and Clara of Salem. The funeral services will be conducted at the residence at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday), under the auspices of the Masonic order and interment will be in Rural cemetery.
