OBITUARY:
BURTON - At the residence of H. B. Holland, South Salem, October 12th, 1889, at 3 o'clock p.m., Captain James Barton.
The deceased was a native of England, born at ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, June 22, 1843. He was educated in the same place as a navigator, and at an early age was given command of a merchant ship, and followed the same until he contracted a fever at Calcutta, East Indies, and ever since he has been an invalid. His physician recommended that he travel in search of health. He came to this country, and located at Mehama, Marion county, on a stock farm, on which he resided. Some five years ago he consulted his physician, and returned to England for treatment. After an absence of nearly a year, he started on his return to this country, and was unfortunately a passenger on the ill-fated steamer Oregon, which was wrecked some forty miles off the Atlantic coast, losing all his personal effects on board, besides having a very narrow escape with his life, but rejoicing that he was spared to meet the dear ones at home. In passing to the higher life, he leaves a wife and two children to mourn his departure.
The funeral of Capt. Barton will take place from the residence of Mr. Holland, in South Salem, to-day, at 2:30 p.m. All friends are invited.
