OBITUARY:
AIKEN--At his home in this city, Monday evening, August 20, 1894, at 7 o'clock, John Aiken, aged nearly 77 years. Mr. Aiken was one of the sturdy Oregon pioneers, whose members are slowing gradually less and whose self-sacrificing, courageous work in early days made possible the pleasures of the Oregon of today. He was born in Tennessee, November 6, 1817, and resided there and in Ohio nearly thirty years. He, in company with Eugene Skinner and Mr. Blair, crossed the plains in the usual way in 1847 and settled at the head of the Willamette valley on the beautiful spot which has since become the city of Eugene, called so in honor of Mr. Skinner. Mr. Aiken sold his interest there to Mr. Blair in 1850 and moved to Winchester, Douglas county, where he lived and prospered several years. Among other enterprises, he owned the ferry across the Umpqua until the advent of the railroad made it unnecessary. He was among the most highly respected residents of Douglas county for many years, having for intimate friends of the early days, Colonel Martin, General Joe Lane and other noted names in Oregon's history. Some fifteen years ago he moved to Salem and his first wife, who died some ten years ago, lies in Rural cemetery. He was married to the wife who now survives him some seven years ago. Two sons, John, who lives at Roseburg, and Joseph, a well-known resident of Salem, are the only surviving children. Edgar, another son, being dead several years. He has suffered very severely for weeks from a complication of ailments incident to old age, but he bore it all with a patience and forbearance which belonged to his gentle, quiet nature. He was a highly respected here by all acquainted with him. The funeral will take place Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the residence, 244 State street, corner of Cottage, and interment in Rural cemetery by the side of his deceased wife.
