PIONEER DIES THIS MORNING AT EARLY HOUR
ALEX CLARK, AGED RESIDENT, PASSES AWAY AT HIS HOME
HE WAS 71 YEARS OLD AND HAD LIVED IN SALEM THE PAST TWENTY-THREE YEARS.
After an illness of ten days, Alex Clark, an aged resident of Salem, died at his home at the Leonard hotel on Front street at 12:30 o’clock this morning. His death, was caused by peritonitis, from which he had suffered extremely for a period of forty-eight hours before his death. Mr. Clark had been proprietor of the Leonard hotel for the past several years. Before taking the proprietorship of the hotel he followed the carpenter trade, and was also a farmer owning a small tract of land near Silverton. His widow survives him; also a daughter, Miss Nellie Clark, an only child who was for some time a missionary in China for the Christian church. They were both at the bedside when Mr. Clark passed away.
