Sep 1866 in Wisconsin, along with children Samuel, age 3, b. Jul 1896 in Wisconsin, Manley, age 2, b. Feb 1898 in Wisconsin, and Frederic, age 5 months, b. Dec 1899 in Wisconsin.  Also enumerated is Esther Hamlin, identified as mother-in-law [of Samuel], age 67, widowed, mother of 4 children 2 of whom are living at the time of the census, b. Feb 183 in New York.

BIOGRAPHICAL:
J. B. Coats indicates that her mother's name was Ester --?--. Laura md. Samuel Luther Brown Coates as wife #2 on 4 Nov. 1896 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin; they had two sons: Frederick Coates b. 19 Dec 1899 and Gilbert Coates, b. abt 1912, prob. In Marion or Polk Co., Oregon. The two stepsons were: Samuel Eugene Coats b. 4 July 1893 and Manley Robert Coates, b. 18 Feb. 1896, both in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

OBITUARY: 
COATES - At the Salem hospital, Tuesday, August 6, 1912, from pelvic abscess, Laura, wife of F. S. [sic - S. L.] Coates, of Oak Grove, aged 39 years.
Besides her husband, five children survive her. The funeral will be held from the Cottage undertaking parlors Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Interment in Odd Fellows' cemetery.
