OBITUARY: Died--Coffey--at his home on Commercial street, Salem, Oregon, Monday December 31, 1888, James Coffey, aged 52 years, 2 months and 17 days.
James Coffey was born in County Kerry, Ireland, October 14, 1836. He immigrated to America when a mere lad and located in Massachusetts. In 1855 he came to Oregon and enlisting in the army, was for several years stationed at old Fort Hoskins, in Benton county. While there he was a member of the company in which the late Gen. Phil. Sheridan was a lieutenant. He afterwards engaged in farming and stockraising in King's Valley, Benton county, and in 1867 he moved to Salem.
He was on the police force four years, was then elected city recorder and served as justice of the peace for six or seven successive terms. He was engaged in the furniture business for fourteen years and also conducted a real estate and collection office for a time.
In 1866 he was married to Miss Johanna Horrigan, who survives him. The issue of this marriage was seven children, six of whom are still living. They are John, now with A. B. Croasman, Portland; Lucy (Mrs. W. H. Eagan, of Brooks), James, Mary, Maggie and Isabel.
Squire, as he was well and favorably known, was a sterling gentleman of the old school. His honesty of purpose was never questioned, and although his bluff, outspoken manner made him enemies at times, he had a host of warm friends. He was member of the I. O. O. F. and A. O. U. W., and for a number of years secretary of Tiger Engine company. He was taken ill last June with an organic disease of the heart and liver, and this superinduced the dropsical affection from which he died.
