OBITUARY: At the residence of his parents, near Scio, in Linn county, Oregon, on May 5th, at 2 a.m., Belden Cornell, aged 23 years, of consumption. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Cornell, who formerly resided in Salem. The remains will be brought to this city on this afternoon’s train, and will be immediately taken to the M. E. Church, where the funeral services will be conducted. All are invited to attend. The Willamette University - of which Belden was a former student - will suspend studies today out of respect to his memory.

GRAVEMARKERS BEARING STONECUTTER’S IDENTIFICATION
Pointed-arched marble tablet of Belden F. Cornell, son of H. and E.J. Cornell, 1862-1885. Signature of maker is on epitaph (west) face, lower right: “Harris & Gillet./Albany,/Or.” City directories were published in Albany in 1878, 1892, and 1905. The firm appears only in the classified listings of the 1892 directory under Marble Works as G.W. Harris. Individual listings in the 1892 directory include Willis E. Gilett [sic], “marble cutter” who works with “Geo. W. Harris.”
