Margaret J. Cosper (1863-1941) Beloved teacher, Margaret Cosper served Salem's schools 52 years from 1883 - 1935. She was a teaching principal 33 years, for 27 at Garfield School. She was remembered for her "well-ordered life, her broad and fair mindedness, her sweetness and graciousness of manner, her loyalty and the modesty which only the great achieve, and which won her the love of co-workers, pupils, patrons and friends." In 1883 there were 11 teachers in the Salem public schools. When she retired there were 217 men and women. All school buildings in use had been erected during her career. Her testimonial banquet was attended by 200 friends, and the book of remembrance she received contained messages from such former students and friends as Senator Charles McNary, Ralph W. Barnes, a foreign correspondent in Moscow, and L. R. Alderman of the United States Department of Education. A native of Jefferson, her father moved to Salem as County Clerk. She graduated from Willamette, studied in California, Chicago and Boston, and one summer was sent abroad with Anne Shannon Monroe, noted Oregon writer. Vitally interested in administrative work, she was an expert guide to the inexperienced teacher. Knowledgeable in both adult and children's literature, her pet project was the Garfield school library. Paper drives conducted by the children bought books to form the nucleus. Her interest in art, led her to choose excellent pictures which hung in the rooms, and she gave three pieces of statuary to the school. Outside of teaching, Miss Cosper served 12 years on the State Textbook Commission, and also as Treasured of the Oregon State Teacher's Association for four years.
