OBITUARY:
DIED--Charles Craft died at his family residence in this city yesterday morning at 4 o'clock, after an illness of two days. The deceased was about sixty-three years old.
The funeral will take place from the M. E. Church today at 3 o'clock, p.m. Mr. Craft was one of the earliest settlers in Salem, having crossed the plains from the Atlantic States in 1845. Long before the broad streets of the city were laid out, he cut timber where our finest brick buildings now stand, and drew it off to build log cabins for the early pioneers. If we are correctly informed the deceased first started the tannery in the eastern part of the city, now operated by Barclay & Ewing. There is no one in the State more highly respected where he is known than Charles Craft; and there is no one whose death will be more deeply deplored.
