In Memory of Mrs. Orlena J. Crandall
"They may rest from their labors, And their works do follow them."
Sacred words, appropriately spoken at the funeral of Mrs. Orlena Crandall, who passed peacefully from this life into a better and higher one, on the morning of September 1, 1896, after a brief illness, which she bore with Christian patience and fortitude.
Mrs. Crandall was widely known and dearly loved for her good works and unselfish devotion to those in affliction. In doing the Master's work, she was ever happy and content.
Mrs. Crandall was born in Champlain county, O., September 3 [8], 1825. She united in the M.E. church when only 18 years of age, and remained faithful and consistent in her duties. The prosperity of Willamette University was a source of infinite pride and pleasure to her. All educational and charitable institutions met with her hearty approval, and received her earnest prayers.
She was married in 1845 to John A Dunfield who bravely gave his life for his country in 1863.
Six children were born of that marriage, four of whom are still living: Mrs. Matilda Lake, Mrs. Elizabeth F Wanless, Albert M. Dunfield, and Mrs. Marietta Judson.
In 1865 Mrs. Crandall crossed the plains with her children to Oregon. She was married to James Smith who died in 1868 at Salem, Oregon. In 1869 she was married to Paul Crandall who died in 1889.
Grandma Crandall, as she was affectionately called, made her home for the past 12 years with her daughter, Mrs. Leonard Judson where she received all the devotion and care love could bestow.
She was ever a loving wife and devoted mother, faithful christian and true friend.
Rev. E.H. Belknap preached her funeral sermon, by request, of deceased.
" She is safe with him who hath the power, O'er pain and sin and death."
