OBITUARY:
DIED -- On Sunday morning, April 20, 1879, at the residence of Hon. A. A. McCully, in this city, W. B. Crane, in the 44th year of his age. Deceased was a native of Newark, N. J., emigrated to West Virginia while quite young, thence to Pittsburgh, Pa., and after a short residence pushed for the west, and remained in St. Louis, Mo., about five years. He finally concluded to gratify a desire to visit the gold fields of the Pacific coast, and set out on the circuitous route by way of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers, arriving in Eastern Oregon in 1862. He first engaged in business as superintendent of the Auburn canal in Baker county, and from that date until his death he spent his time almost exclusively in some class of mining business; dividing it between Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and California fields. December 8th, 1870, he married Miss Allie, eldest daughter of A. A. McCully of Salem, and soon after settled in Oakland, Cal., where his family has since resided. After about two months illness in California, his physician advised a visit to friends in Oregon and cessation of active business; and when he arrived in this city, three weeks since, little did he or his friends think that he would so be called to his final rest. But the great governor of the universe, directing events under unchangeable laws, called him hence, and he peacefully obeyed the summons.
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, Rev. Mr. Tower officiating. The remains were followed to the Odd Fellows' cemetery by a large concourse of relatives and friends.
