OBITUARY:
Youth Killed As Sled Hits Delivery Car.
James E. Crittendon, Age 11, dies shortly after accident in South Salem Monday afternoon.
Coasting companion escapes by miracle.
Ervin Bahlburg rolls off sled before crash.
Winter sports claimed the first victim of the season here late Monday afternoon when James Emerson Crittendon, age 11, was struck by a bread delivery wagon driven by Arthur Jepson while coasting across South High street between 4:30 and 5 o’clock. The lad died from his injuries about 30 minutes after the accident.
Riding on the sled with the Crittendon lad was Ervin Bahlberg, age 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bahlberg, 2395 South Church, who rolled from the sled before it was struck by the automobile.
Accident Unavoidable
Unable to see the boys coasting, because of the early darkness, the driver of the truck, proceeding south on High, made every effort to serve the vehicle before striking the sled. His attempt was unsuccessful and the rear wheel of the truck ran across the youth’s body.
Dr. C.A. Downs, who lives in that part of the city, was called and the boy taken to the Salem hospital, where he died. According to the physician death was caused by a fractured skull, while the boy also received a double fracture of one leg and severe chest bruises.
James Crittendon is survived by his father, Ira J. Crittenson, of 2325 East Nob Hill, who is proprietor of the Economy Furniture store; two sisters, Marjorie, of Salem, and Hazel, of Edmonton, Canada, and one brother, Stanley, of Tennessee. The remains are in charge of the Rigdon mortuary and funeral announcements will be made later.
