OBITUARY:
James T. Crump is Dead!
Men spoke low, and many an eye, too proud to weep, furtively dashed away a tear at the thought that he, so manly, so genial, so full of promise when we last saw him, but a few days since--he against whom not a single person could be found to charge a crime, has fallen, has passed into eternity, the victim of his own rash, fatal mistake. An aged mother weeps for her darling boy; a young wife mourns the heart that only too tender to share with her the burden of its grief; loving brothers and sisters grieve for the companion of their childhood; and the circle of his friends, which is bounded by the limits of his acquaintance, feel the loss of one, his own and only enemy.
Mr. Crump left Salem some weeks since, in search of a situation. He went to Astoria, and from there returned to Portland, unsuccessful. He wrote on Monday to his mother, stating that he had resolved to take his own life, that he was pecuniarily involved, and could not bear the idea of failing to make good his word in business matters; his proud, sensitive nature fancied that his friends already were growing cool, and he could not live in disgrace; he had not dared to explain things to his family, and finally had resolved to put a violent end to all earthly trouble, and that he should be dead before they received that letter. This was received on Tuesday night, and efforts made to telegraph to I. R. Moores, Esq, who was in Portland, but the operator at that place had gone and word could not be sent until yesterday morning, at half-past nine. Mr. Moores telegraphed he had found him dying. The unfortunate young man had taken twelve grains of morphine and was unconscious. Messages were sent over the line frequently, and at last came the word that he had expired at twenty minutes past one yesterday afternoon.
James T. Crump was born in Missouri, from whence he emigrated to Oregon in 1846 with his parents. His father, who kept the first store in Salem, died some six years ago. His mother, two brothers and two sisters are living in our midst. He was married a few months ago, and the last word in his farewell letter was a word of love for her. The remains will be brought up on the boat to-day for interment by the Society of Odd Fellows. A deputation from Anniversary Lodge, of which he was a member, will meet the Albany and return with the body. The funeral will take place on the following day.

SUICIDE--A sad case of suicide occurred at the Occidental Hotel on Wednesday last. Mr. J. T. Crump, of Salem, in a fit of despondency, destroyed his life by taking 12 grains of acetate of morphia. The sad affair occasions great grief in the large circle of his relatives. The body of J. T. Crump was taken to Salem for burial in charge of Hon. I. R. Moores.
