OBITUARY: OLD MAN FOUND DEAD;
Charles M. Day Found Covered With His Own Blood
This morning The Journal received news by telephone that Charles M. Day, an old batchelor, residing on the garden road, had been found dead in his house.
The dead man is aged between fifty and sixty years and lived by himself in a cozy little cottage on the Garden road, just across the street from the residence of J. W. Lyons and a little beyond the Henry Savage place. He was a quiet inoffensive old man without an enemy in the world, as far as his neighbors knew.
Day was in the habit of getting a bucket of water every evening from the well of his neighbor Lyons, and also did some work for the same party. A few days ago he complained of having an earache and quit work. Tuesday night he did not come for his usual bucket of water and as nothing was seen of him on Wednesday a search was made this morning. When his neighbors entered his room a horrid sight met their eyes; the dead form of their old friend, half on and half off his bed, which was blood stained and soiled from the gore that had flowed apparently from his mouth.
The room was in good order but as yet a careful official examination has not been had. Twenty-three dollars were found in a trunk in the room. The old man was known to have considerable property. The neighbors are much excited over the matter and demand a thorough investigation by the authorities, which is being conducted this afternoon by the coroner.
Capital Journal 10 Nov 1898 4:3
DEAD - Charles M. Day, a contractor living 2 1/2 miles from Salem on the Garden road, was found by a neighbor, J. W. Lynne, last Thursday morning. A coroner's jury was summoned and rendered a verdict that death was caused by putrefaction of the bowels in the pyloric region. Day was a native of Massachusetts, 62 years of age, and had lived in the suburbs of Salem for 9 years, where he owned a comfortable home on a five acre tract. He also had two lots in Salem and property in Snohomish, Wash. No money was found on his person, but there was $23 about in his trunk. There were blood stains on the bed where the dead man was found, but a post mortem examination failed to develop any evidence of foul play. He had no relatives at Salem, but is thought to have left some at Jacksonville, Ill and in Massachusetts.
