OBITUARY:
At the family residence, corner of Center and Water streets, Salem, March 31, 1892, at seventeen minutes past 11 o’clock p.m., Sarah Durbin, aged 90 years and 5 months.
"Grandma" Durbin’s maiden name was Sarah Fitting, and her birthplace was in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. She became the wife of John Durbin in Ohio during the year 1821, and several years later they emigrated to Oregon, coming direct to Marion county where they settled on the old donation claim eight miles north of Salem.
Twenty years ago they concluded to give up the cares of the farm life and moved to Salem, where they have been constant residents. The result of their union was ten children, six of whom are living--C.J., of Huntington, Baker county, Fannie Martin, of Salem Prairie, Solomon, Isaac and Daniel Dubbin, and Mrs. J. Starkey of Salem. She had forty-three grand children, sixty-six great grand children, and three great great great grand children. The funeral will take place at the residence at 10 o’clock a.m. tomorrow (Saturday), the remains being buried in Rural cemetery. A more extended history of this old pioneer will be given later on in the Statesman.
