OBITUARY: HAS PASSED AWAY
MISS ALVINA (sic) FLETCHER SUCCUMBS TO CANCER OF THE STOMACH
Miss Alvina Fletcher passed away at 10 o'clock Friday night, March 6, 1903, at the home of her brother, Silas Fletcher, near the Fair Grounds. She had been sick for about four weeks, of a complication of diseases, including cancer of the stomach.
Deceased was born in Mercer county, Illinois, May 3, 1850, and in 1864 came to Oregon with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Fletcher, settling on a farm in Howell Prairie, and the following year removed to Salem, where she made her home until the spring of 1882, when she went to Linn county to keep house for her brother, William Fletcher, since deceased. After a few years residence in Linn county she returned to Salem, where she has made her home ever since.
She is survived by two brothers, Silas and Henry C., both residents of Salem, one sister, Mrs. Lois Whealdon, of Linn county, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Esther Farwell of Plainview, Linn county, and Lucy Churchman, of Sheridan, Yamhill county.
Miss Fletcher was not a member of any church, but was a firm believer in Christianity, and of the Universalist faith. She was not a member of any organization, and did not take much part in public works of any kind, but in her quiet, peaceful life she showed a gentle disposition and kindly deed at her hands. She leaves a large host of warm friends who will greatly miss her. The funeral will be from the Unitarian church today at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Frank A. Powell, and the remains will be interred in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
