OBITUARY: At the home of her parents, No. 542 Front street, at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, 1894, of tuberculosis of the stomach, Ethel M. Gray, aged 19 years and 8 months. The deceased was the only daughter of John and Alice D. Gray of this city. She was born on December 1, 1874, in the building which stood on the northeast corner of Church and Chemeketa streets and then occupied by the state deaf mute school; Mrs. Gray being the matron at that time. Reaching that period in life when she could enter upon the duties of attaining an education Ethel became a pupil of the Salem public schools and soon passed through the several grades to the 8th A class, the highest in the course of the city schools. Being possessed of superior mental faculties she entered upon this work with renewed vigor and at the close of the first term in January, 1892, passed an exceptionally difficult examination and with fifteen others was graduated from the grammar department. After a few weeksÂ’ recreation she entered the Capital business college and would have bidden adieu to that institution last April had not her delicate constitution required her to give up the studies. In February last she was taken ill and during most of the time since then her condition was such that she could not leave her room. Through her illness she always showed that sweet disposition of which she was possessed and endured her suffering with the greatest of patience. She was a favorite with both old and young in this city and the news of her demise will be sad intelligence to many. A few years ago she united with the First Congregational church of Salem and was a constant attendant and a thorough Christian worker in that religious body. A father, mother and one brother compose the family of which she was a dearly beloved one and to them the sympathy of the entire community is extended in their hour of bereavement. Notice of the funeral will be given in tomorrowÂ’s Statesman. Oregon Statesman 2 August 1894 4:4
