OBITUARY:
HARBORD--Mr. G. M. Harbord Fails to Recover from Recent Attack of Paralysis.
Former Chief of Police of Salem and Spokane Passes Away After Illness of Three Weeks.
Is Survived By Four Children.
M. G. Harbord died at the Willamette Sanitarium yesterday morning at 11 o’clock, after an illness of three weeks. He was on his way from Fort Worth, Texas, to Salem, Oregon when stricken with paralysis and placed in the railroad hospital at Cheyenne, Wyoming. His daughter, Miss Kittie Harbord, went to his beside and brought him to Salem, but his case proved one beyond the assistance of medical aid.
Mr. Harbord was born in McLean county, Illinois, and had he lived until July 3d would have reached the age of 70 years. Mr. Harbord was married in 1862 to Jane Price, at Bloomington, Ill., and to them seven children were born, four of whom are still living. Mrs. Harbord died in 1885, in Salem. The family moved to Oregon in 1876, settling in Yamhill county, and came to Salem about two years after that. He was therefore not a stranger to old Salemites. He was three times elected marshal of this city, serving in that capacity from 1880 to 1886.
In 1888 he removed to Spokane, where he has since resided. He served on the police force in that city for several years and was afterwards elected to the office of chief of police for Spokane in 1890 for one term. Mr. Harbord was truly a good man, kind hearted and charitable, and was ever ready and willing to stretch forth his hand and assist those in distress when able to do so.
He had not been in good health of late years, and about a year ago decided to go to Texas in the home of recuperating, but not being benefitted, he concluded to return to Salem to live with his daughters. The four children surviving Mr. Harbord are Mrs. Ida M. Knopp, Davenport, Wash., Rolla C. Harbord, Spokane, Wash; Kittie W. Harbord and Mrs. D. J. Fry of Salem. The last two were at the bedside of their father when the end came.
The funeral will be held at the residence of Daniel J. Fry, No. 600 South High street at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7th. Interment at the family lot in I.O.O.F. cemetery. Rev. P.S. Knight, an old friend of the Harbord family, will officiate at the residence, assisted by Rev. F. E. Dell, pastor of the First Congregational church. At the cemetery Pacific Lodge No. 50, A.F. & A.M. of which Mr. Harborn had been a member for many years, will have charge of the body and conduct the solemn ceremonies of the Masonic burial service.
