OBITUARY: Salem, Oregon, Jan. 8, 1877.
To the memory of Charley M. Harris, who accidentally shot himself, near Eola, Polk county, Wednesday, Dec. 27, 1876, and died Sunday, Dec. 31, 1876, at fifteen minutes past ten o’clock, A.M., aged 27 years, 8 months and 9 days.
While many relatives and friends in our community are mourning the loss of one of their social circle, we, too, are led to feel that death has laid its cold hand upon another one in our midst. Another link is broken, and another tie is severed. Charley leaves behind many who loved him tenderly, and who keenly feel their loss, in his death, as a friend and social companion. The bereaved parents, sisters and brothers find ready sympathizers in all who knew him. His life was that of a model young man, an affectionate and dutiful son, a kind and unselfish brother. It has not, perhaps, been our fortune to be as intimately acquainted with him as some, yet we know it was his delight to administer comfort to the sick and suffering. His name will be remembered but to bless. Though he sleeps in the lonely grave, his words of kindness and sympathy will still live.
May Heaven’s choicest blessing rest upon the bereaved and afflicted family, is my earnest prayer.
Then let him rest in the valley’s breast, His voice is hushed forever
He’s gone before to the silent shore, Where death no more can sever. –K.W.
