OBITUARY: 
PIONEER OF 73 CROSSES DIVIDE Mrs. Harry [sic] Baker, 78, pioneer who came to Salem in 1873, died at 7:20 this morning at the home of her daughter six miles northwest of Salem. She came to Oregon from Redwood Falls, Minn. At the time of her coming she was 27 years of age. She was the wife of Lewis M. Baker, Civil war veteran, wounded at the battle of Gettysburg, who died five years ago. Mrs. Baker first became sick some three years ago. Her illness gradually grew worse, taking a downward turn a week ago. All her life she was an active worker in the Christian church. She has a number of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren living in Salem. One son, Chester Baker, is an employee of The Capital Journal. Another son, Frank A. Baker and a daughter Mrs. Ella M. McDowell live in this city. Of her eight grandchildren three, Richard and Dorothy Baker, and Grace Runner, live in Salem. Mrs. Baker was a charter member of the W. R. C. and Silver Bell Circle number 43. Representatives of the two organizations will assist Rev. Cannell of West Salem in the funeral services, which are to take place next Saturday at 10.a.m. Capital Journal, 19 Feb 1925 7:4 Mrs. Mary Melissa Baker died at the home of her daughter six miles northwest of Salem at the age of 78 years. The death occurred at 7:30 o'clock this morning. She is survived by four sons, Fred O. of Spokane, Frank A. of Salem, Edward D. of Redwood City, California, and Chester C. of Salem, a daughter, Mrs. Ella M. McDowell of Salem, two brothers, Henry and Levi Charter, a sister Mrs. Louise Fontaine of VanNuys, Cal., a sister, Mrs. Emma Thompson of Seattle, 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Of the grandchildren, Richard and Dorothy Baker and Grace Runner, are residents of Salem. Mrs. Baker was a charter member of the W. R. C. and Silver Bell Circle No. 43. She was a member of the First Christian church for 65 years. She came to Oregon in 1873. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 21 at 10 a.m. at the Webb funeral parlors, with Rev. Cannell of West Salem, assisted by the W. R. C. officiating. Interment in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Capital Journal, 19 Feb 1925 pg 7:5
