OBITUARY: 
HARTY- At the home of Mrs. D. Workman, No. 182 Center street, at 7:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 1897, Mrs. .James N. Harty, aged 70 years 2 months and 15 days.
The maiden name of the decease was Verlinder Watson and she was a native of Kentucky, being born July 8 1827. On Sept 30, 1868 she became the wife of James N. Harty, the ceremony being performed at Hillsboro, Oregon. For nearly twenty years with her husband she resided west of Portland, and in 1885 came to Salem where she has since resided. Her husband died January 24, 1894 and was buried at Salem.
While Mrs. Harty has been afflicted for several years she was not obliged to take to her bed until about two weeks ago. While the end was sudden and quite unexpected, her spirit took its flight was left the body as in peaceful and quiet repose.
The deceased was a consistent member of the Christian church. She has no relatives in this state. Her husband was a step-brother to Mrs. Workman with whom she has been living since his demise.
Funeral services will be conducted from the First Christian church at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon and Rev. Wm. Manning will officiate. The remains will be interred beside those of her husband in Rural Cemetery.
