OBITUARY: OLD PIONEER PASSES AWAY.
Hon John Hughes Died at His Home in This City Yesterday.
Was One of Salem’s Oldest and Most Respected Citizens.
Served Three Terms as a City Councilman.
Funeral Will be Held Today.
Hon. John Hughes, one of the old pioneers and most substantial and respected merchants of the Capital City, died at the family residence on High street yesterday, Saturday morning, at 6:30 o’clock, at the age of nearly 72 years.
Mr. Hughes was taken down with la grippe, about seven weeks ago, since which time the dread disease has held him firmly in its clutch, and he had been growing constantly worse, so that the end was not unexpected by the family and friends.
Deceased was born near Knoxville, Union county, Tennessee, June 21, 1831. In 1852 he crossed the plains with an ox-team and in that same year, settled near Salem, where he worked on the farm for a short time. He then learned the painter’s trade, and for the next ten years followed that vocation in this city. In 1864 he went into the grocery business, which he has since so successfully conducted. Up to the time of his death he was the only merchant of that early day still conducting business in this city.
Deceased was one of the Oregon Indian War veterans, having fought in the Yakima Indian War under Captain Bennett. He was married to Miss Emma B. Pringle, on July 29 1897, and she still survives to mourn his death. Five children also survive him: Lulu M. now Mrs. A. N. Bush, of this city; Genevieve, now Mrs. D. B. Mackie, of Portland; Ethel, now Mrs. W. A. Carter, of Gold Hill; George P. Hughes, and J. F. Hughes, and one grandchild Asahel Bush Jr.
Deceased was a charter member of Chemeketa Lodge No. 1, I.O.O.F. having joined that order in 1853. He was not a member of any church, but his sympathies were with Methodism, and he had always affiliated with the First M. E. church in this city, being one of its staunchest supporters. Mr. Hughes has always been prominent in public life, although not a politician in any sense of the word, and has been three times a member of the city council for long periods. He has always been a loyal supporter of Republican principles. In public works he has always taken a prominent part, being anxious to assist in any enterprise for the advancement of the community in which he lived. He took a leading part in the construction of the steel bridge over the Willamette river, and in constructing the sewer system now in use in the city. He was also for years a member of the Board of Trustees of Willamette University and one of the best friends of the old school. Mr. Hughes always took a prominent and leading part in public affairs and has left many substantial monuments in Salem by which he will be remembered in future years. He was a highly respected citizen, and an excellent neighbor, and his demise will be deeply felt not only by the family, but also by all who knew him.
Friends who wish to call will be received this morning. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 5 o’clock this evening, Rev. John Parsons officiating, and immediately following private services will be held at the grave in Rural cemetery, under the auspices of the Odd Fellows.
