OBITUARY: YEE LON HUIN GOES OVER GREAT DIVIDE.
Prominent Local Chinese Merchant Expires After Illness of Eight Years.
Salem’s Chinatown was place into a state of mourning and confusion last evening when Yee Lon Huin, A Chinese merchant, aged 57 years, closed his eyes in perpetual slumber. Yee Lon Huin has been an invalid for the past eight years, having suffered several severe stokes of paralysis which place him in such condition as to be unable to talk. The last and most severe stroke came last evening and Yee Lon Huin was too weak to bear up any longer under the severe strain.
Yee Lon Huin was well known in Chinese circles all along the Pacific and having been a resident of this country for thirty-one years, during which time he arose from a common laborer to a merchant, he being the proprietor of the Yee Lon Huin Co.’s establishment in China row on High street. When a Statesman reporter arrived at the store, several Chinese were watching the corpse with tear bedimmed eyes and has absolutely nothing to say. Candles burned before quaint and curious images and the air of the place was heavy laden with the aroma of burning joss sticks, and other odorous Chinese paraphenalia.
This afternoon at 2 o’clock Yee Lon Huin will be laid away with the usual Chinese funeral ceremonies, in which strands of bits of various colored paper [unreadable] punctured with a small hole through which the evil spirit must pass if he would follow and enter the soul of the departed Chinaman, will figure prominently. Interment will be made in the Odd Fellows’ cemetery.
