MR. JEFFERSON'S DEATH. The Oregonian, of yesterday has the following concerning the death of Edward Jefferson; Delos Edward Jefferson, a student at the Willamette Medical college of this city, dropped dead on the stone pavement in front of W. S. Ladd's residence on the south side of Jefferson, between Six and Seventh streets, about 10 o'clock yesterday morning.
The first who saw the young man lying on the sidewalk was Michael Duffy, driver of a butcher's delivery wagon. He stopped to see what was the matter and found that the prostrate man was dead. Several people had collected by this time, and some one went to the medical college to a doctor. Drs. S. E. Joseph and R. Evarett went to his place, but were too late to save his life, although every possible effort was made toward resuscitation.
The body was taken to a room formerly occupied by the deceased and for an hour and a half the doctors worked against hope to bring back the departed spark of life. The coroner was notified and took charge of the remains. In the afternoon an inquest was held. Dr. Patton, who aided in the attempt to resuscitate the dead man, furnished a statement to the coroner's jury, in which he expressed the belief that deceased came to his death by heart disease induced by inflammatory rheumatism, and a verdict was rendered in accordance with such statement.
Deceased was a son of Delos Jefferson, who resides about six miles south of Salem. He was for about one and a half years a student under Dr. L. L. Rowland of Salem, and had been attending the college here since November 10 of last year. His age is about 20 years. He was a brother of the wife of Captain Bell of East Portland, and a young man quite well known and highly esteemed.
His parents were notified by telegraph of his sudden death, and the remains will be taken to Salem for burial by this morning's train.
