OBITUARY: PIONEER OF THE FIFTIES
Dies at His Son's Home in South Salem.
John A. Johns died Tuesday night at 11 o'clock Feb 11th, 1902, at the residence of his son, Warren Johns, two miles south of this city after a short illness.
Mr. Johns was past eighty-one years, having been born at Frankfort, Kentucky, Dec. 1, 1820. He came to Oregon in the immigration by ox team, reaching Oregon city in the fall of 1851. In the spring of 1852 he came to Salem and started a harness shop, which was his trade and Jos. Baker and Wm. Watkins were his first apprentices. He brought his wife and three children with him, and five were born here.
His wife survives him and six of the children, Geo., Henry, and Warren Johns, residing in Salem, Mrs. Bella Bryant at Los Angeles, Mrs. Alice Campbell in Washington, Mrs. Clara Wheeler in Portland. Two of the children, John A. Jr., and Mrs. Mary Lawrence have gone before. Deceased has many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who love and revere his memory.
Deceased was not a member of any church or lodge and all his life was a staunch Democrat. He was in business at Salem a number of years, returning to his farm south of town where he died, at different times working at his trade at Salem and Portland for pastime. As a man he was the soul of generosity to his friends and of kindness to his family, taking a good deal of enjoyment out of life as he went along and leaving little of this earth's goods behind him. The funeral will be held from the home of Warren Johns on Friday at 1:30 to be conducted by Rev. W. C. Kantner. Burial in Rural cemetery.
