SEPTUAGENARIAN PASTOR AND WIFE OBSERVE GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY.
Rev. and Mrs. P. S. Knight. Salem, Or., April 22 -- (Special) -- Without a celebration Rev. P. S. Knight and his wife today observed their 50th wedding anniversary, and were recipients of congratulations from scores of friends. Rev. Mr. Knight is one of the best-known pastors in the Willamette Valley. He came to Salem in 1857, and with the exception of two years spent in Oregon City, has been a resident continuously.
For 17 years he was pastor of the First Congregational Church here, and, although no 74 years of age, he is still engaged actively in pastoral work in connection with the church at Macleay. He makes his home here, but every second Sunday he preaches at Macleay, where he organized a Sunday school recently.
He attended Willamette University for four years in his younger days, and has had a varied career as pastor, lawyer and newspaper man.
When Rev. Mr. Knight arrived in Salem there were between 400 and 500 people here and the only two religious organizations in the city were the First Methodist Church and the First Congregational Church. At that time there were but churches of the Congregational denomination in Oregon, Idaho and Washington.
Besides his active career, he organized a church at Corvallis, at Eugene, at Corvallis, and in the Waldo Hills. He has married 563 couples and since the first of the year has officiated at 22 funeral services.
Mrs. Knight is not in robust health, and as a consequence no celebration of the golden wedding anniversary was held. Chapman Scrapbook, pg. 135. [newspaper not named but probably a Portland one -- not dated]

DEATH CERTIFICATE:
OBITUARY:
MRS. P. S. KNIGHT IS CALLED BY DEATH.
Well Known and Highly Respected Pioneer Woman Dead--Stomach Trouble.
Mrs. P. S. Knight, the wife of the well-known minister, passed away Sunday afternoon at her home on Liberty street, after an illness from stomach trouble extending over a period of several weeks. Mrs. Knight was born in La Port, Indiana, January 25, 1839, and in 1847 crossed the plains with her parents, settling in Yamhill county. Her maiden name was Ellenor Smith. In 1852 she removed to Salem with her parents, having thus lived here continuously for 59 years. She was married to Rev. P. S. Knight, April 21, 1861, and together they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary just one month before her death.
To them were born two daughters, both of whom preceded their mother to the grave. Luella died at the age of 24 in 1888, and Lena, the wife of W. A. Stringer, in California, January of last year. Luella, the elder girl, was a talented musician and Lena an artist of skill and a graduate of kindergarten work. The loss of the children was a great grief to Mrs. Knight, but she bore up patiently till her own summons came. Together with her husband, she has been a member of the Congregational church since 1863, and has been a faithful and conscientious Christian, a devoted wife and mother and a kind friend and neighbor.
To Mr. Knight, who has comforted many in times of sorrow, the sympathy of all is extended, and yesterday he showed the brave spirit that has carried him through dark places when he put his own grief aside and conducted the funeral of an old friend, Mrs. Adair. He said yesterday that the figure 21 had played an important part in his life. His own birth had occurred April 21, his marriage on that date, 24 years later, his daughter died on January 21 and his wife on May 21. The funeral of Mrs. Knight will take place Thursday at 2 o'clock from the First Congregational Church.
