DEATH CERTIFICATE:
OBITUARY:
On Monday, January 27, 1896, at 3:20 p.m., at the Oregon state school for deaf mutes, Salem, of brain fever, Herbert Spencer Lamb, aged 7 years and 7 months.
Deceased was one of the pupils at that institution having been enrolled on October 2d last. About one week ago the little fellow was taken ill and, despite the careful attention given him by one of the leading physicians of Salem and the superintendent of the school, he gradually grew worse until the Angel of Death claimed him at the time above stated.
When he was eight months old he was stricken with scarlet fever which caused paralysis of the nerves of the ear, thus destroying his sense of hearing. Herbert was a bright, healthy lad and the idol of his parents, who are residents of Salem having come here from Roseburg at the time the school opened last fall. His death is a great shock to them and also to his class-mates and a deep gloom was cast over the institution when the little spirit took its flight.
Funeral services will be conducted at the chapel of the mute school by Superintendent J. B. Early, using the sign language, and the funeral cortage will start for Rural cemetery at 11 o'clock where interment will take place.
