OBITUARY:

EMINENT STUDENT
Was Buried At Rural Cemetery Saturday Afternoon.
The funeral of James Stratton Batt was held from his late home at Liberty Saturday, and the remains were buried at the Rural Cemetery.
This talented young man died after a short and severe sickness on Thursday, September 11th. Young Batt was something over 18 year of age, passing his childhood in the Liberty neighborhood. He was one of the most noble characters to be found in any community. What he studied at school he soon mastered. In everything he undertook he pursued it with honest and eager purpose, and was recognised as a leader among his school mates. He was converted a year ago in the revivial meeting at the Leslie M. E. church, south Salem, led by Rev. Blackburn.
He had especial talent for music. Five years ago he commenced the study of vocal music, making such rapid and easy progress, it was suggested that he make music a study. In this he showed superior talent. In the past two years he has contributed to many socials and entertainments (in Salem and elsewhere) to the pleasure of the audiences, many wondering at his masterful way of getting tone from the piano, and the beautiful expression of his playing. Dr. Parvin says his study of harmony and composition was the best of any student he ever had. While the average student receives many corrections, Mr. Batt never made a mistake in writing his harmony exercises, and only in one instance was there ever a serious error found in his advanced work in compositions.
Many of his friends predicted for him, should he live, a brilliant success as a pianist, that he would be known everywhere in the musical world. He had already committed several of Beethoven's sonatas and other pieces of the greatest masters. In his performance of DeKonski's Revillede Lion he carried his audience "off their feet," as it were. He will be greatly missed by his school mates in the N. W. N. college. But all we can say, although there seemed to be such a brilliant future for this good young man, "Not our will, but Thy will be done."
