James Henry Lunn, a civil war veteran, and formerly one of the wealthiest citizens of Salem’s early history, died yesterday at noon at his home, four miles east of Salem at the age of 74 years. Two sons, George and James Lunn of San Francisco survive him. Mr. Lunn was born in Montgomeryshire, Wales, December 29, 1841, of English parents. With his father, Dr. Richard Lunn and family, he came to America when 8 years of age, settling in Quincy, Ill. When 21 years of age he enlisted in Company A, Fiftieth Illinois, for service in the civil war, rising to the rank of captain. He filled his position with honor until mustered out at the close of the war in the spring of ’65. From that time until a few years ago he had been actively engaged in business, both in Oregon and California.
He came to Oregon in 1878 and started in business in Scio with George W. Johnson of Salem, a near friend, who was with him during his last illness. In 1883 he came to Salem and for several years was in the drug business, after which he spent about twelve years in San Francisco, returning to Salem two years ago. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o’clock from the chapel of Rigdon and Richardson, under the auspices of Sedgwick Post No. 10, G.A.R. The interment will be in the City View cemetery [sic IOOF] beside his wife, who died twenty-five years ago.
