OBITUARY:
Typhoid Fever
This disease appears to be more prevalent at the present time than the real necessities of the case would demand. We made mention but a few days since of five cases in the family of Chas. Mathieu, of this city. We learned yesterday that in the family of his brother, Hon. F. X. Mathieu, six are stricken down with the same disease. They reside near Butteville, in this county. Two of the five patients in Chas. Mathieu’s family are now considered out of danger. There is, however, a need for additional help in watching, which some kind hearted friends should apply.

A House of Mourning An obituary notice in our last issue announced the death of little Jamie Mathieu, aged seven years. Last Sunday night the writer of this watched by the bedside of the little sufferer, and although he was very sick his case at that time was not considered dangerous. In the same room with him laid a brother and sister, stricken down with the same disease, while in an adjoining room were two other members of the family, the baby and the oldest daughter. They, too, were very ill; the infant's case was considered critical. Yesterday we called again and a crape on the door informed us that Death had called in our absence. We entered the house and in the sitting room found Stanley, a bright, intelligent boy of about thirteen years, tossing restlessly on a bed of pain. The baby laid in the crib and its pale, sunken features, and its heart rending moans impressed a picture on our minds that relentless Time can never obliterate. In an adjoining bed room were the two older girls, in a convalescing state.
Two or three kind neighbors were present doing all in their power to alleviate the sufferings of the family. One of these opened the door leading into the bed room where, but a few short hours before we had entered intent on doing what we could toward alleviating the painful sufferings of one whom we now saw laid out in the snowy habiliments of the grave.
The cold, silent form of little Jamie, our especial pet, was stretched out on a board of cruel hardness as it seemed to us when we first gazed upon it. We realized soon, that little Jamie's spirit had fled and it mattered but little whether the receptacle of the body was of downy softness or not. The child was an uncommonly beautiful one, and as he lay in his innocence there we could scarcely believe he was gone from us. He appeared only to be sleeping; but oh, how long he slept. Poor Jamie! But why speak of him thuse? He has passed away, but the journey he has taken terminated with the angels above, and he has donned their heavenly plumage. His stay on earth was but short at best, but he has left us pure and unbeguiled. No stain of sin can be found upon his garments, and as we turned away, our eyes bedimmed with tears, we knew full well he was better off by far than those he left behind. His almost broken hearted parents have but little opportunity to give way to their grief, for two of their remining household need all their care and attention. May God in his infinite goodness give them grace to bear up under their numbeous afflictions, and may they come forth purified and better able to cope with the adversities of life.
