Dr. J. W. McAfee (1823-1892) was one of the more active medical figures in Salem for about twenty years. After practicing in Benton County about twelve years, he went to San Francisco to bring his medical knowledge up to date, and graduated from Toland Medical College in 1863. He was appointed professor of chemistry and toxicology in the Willamette Medical Department when it was organized three years later, and served on the faculty until 1878, part of the time as dean. McAfee also was a charter member of the State Medical Society, but his name disappears from the membership list after 1883. [res 168 Trade].
