DEATH CERTIFICATE:
OBITUARY:
McDOWELL -- At his residence in Salem, on Sunday morning, April 3d, 1887, Frank D. McDowell, aged 31 years.
The funeral was held yesterday, the body being conducted to the Presbyterian church by the Masonic fraternity, where impressive services were held, the pastor, Rev. H. A. Newell, delivering a most appropriate funeral address. From thence the body was taken to the grave in the I.O.O.F. cemetery, and there the beautiful and impressive Masonic burial rites were performed.
Frank D. McDowell was born in Marion county, Oregon, about five miles south of Salem, on the 6th day of August, 1855, and died at his residence in this city at 4:20 a.m., Sunday, April 3, 1887. When only three weeks old, his mother died, and to his lot fell all the adversities of the orphan.
He received a common school education, mostly at Willamette university. He was made a Freemason in Salem Lodge No. 4, in the year 1878, and filled with credit every elective office in that lodge, including that of W. M., besides attending to many other important duties relating to the craft in the Grand Lodge. He was married to Miss Ella B. Melson, of this city, Dec. 29, 1881.
When only fairly into his teens, he set about learning the trade of watchmaker and jeweler, and with a thoroughness characteristic of the man of after years, the boy mastered all the details of the business. By economy and persevering industry, he worked out a competence for himself, and embarked in business on his own account a few years ago as the successor of J. H. Haas.
He was for more than seven years an active and efficient member of Capital Engine company No. 1, of the fire department of Salem, and no one was braver than he in facing the dangers and exertions incident to the duties of a fireman. In fact a cold contracted at the burning of the sash factory at the foot of Liberty street, in 1882, induced the disease which finally proved fatal to him.
He became a member of the Presbyterian church of this city in 1879, and continued in that faith until his death. In this community, where in spite of adversity, he has struggled up to manhood and established a standing above reproach, the memory of Frank D. McDowell needs no studied laudation. His character, as known by those about him, is a memorial far more eloquent than the most gifted pen may write. He was ambitious to succeed in business, but to him success meant, not necessarily wealth, but a well deserved reputation for integrity. Honesty was with him not a mere policy, but a principle--a passion. He made no loud professions on any subject but his ideas on moral questions were well grounded. He was quiet and unobtrusive, but had great force of character. His great will power sustained him where many another would have failed, and this feature of his disposition, aided by the loving ministrations of a most devoted wife kept him up even to the last so that he never yielded the struggle till death was imminent.
His departure to the far country beyond the bounds of time was peaceful in the consolation of religion, and "He approached the grave sustained by an unfaltering trust, Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, And lies down to pleasant dreams."
