OBITUARY:
M. E. McGilchrist Dies, Washington D. C.
Word of Passing of Former Salem Resident Reaches This City; Position Held in Office of U. S. Attorney General.
Word of the death of Millar E. McGilchrist, son of William McGilchrist, Sr., of this city, in Washington, D. C., was received here Tuesday. He died that morning at the Mount Alto veterans hospital following an operation. He was special assistant to the attorney general of the United States, and had previously been first assistant United States attorney at Portland. President Hoover, on learning of Mr. McGilchrist’s death, sent flowers from the white House conservatory, and messages of condolence were sent to the widow by many high government officials including the attorney general.
News of Mr. McGilchrist’s death came as a complete surprise to his Salem friends, as they had no information that he had been ill or that an operation was contemplated. Only 36 years old, Mr. McGilchrist had one of the brightest futures of any young attorney on the staff of the federal department of justice. This was the statement made here Tuesday by Willis Moore, assistant attorney general, who talked with McGilchrist’s associates while he was on a recent visit to the national capitol.
Mr. McGilchrist was born in Portland in January, 1893, and was brought by his parents to Salem in the same year. He graduated from Salem high school in 1909, and subsequently attended the University of Oregon. After graduating at the university he returned to Salem and attended the law department of Willamette university. He afterward went to Harvard, where he enlisted in the World war and was assigned to the officers training camp at the Presidio. He previously was on the Mexican border. While at the Presidio he became second lieutenant and was sent to Camp Lewis, where he had charge of coastwise routing of troop trains. At the conclusion of the war be became assistant to Attorney General Brown, and continued to serve in this capacity for three years, when he accepted the position of deputy United States attorney with headquarters in Portland. In May 1928, McGilchrist was appointed special assistant to the attorney general of the United States and was assigned to the work of enforcing the income tax law. He has tried and won a large number of important legal cases during the past few years.
Mr. McGilchrist was married to Gertrude Buell of Eugene, who survives him. He also leaves his father, William McGilchrist, Sr., Salem, and the following brothers and sisters; William McGilchrist Jr., James and Gordon McGilchrist, all of Salem; Mrs. W. P. Douglas, Berkeley, Calif.; Miss Ethel McGilchrist, Fresno, Calif.; Miss Jean McGilchrist, Portland and Dr. N. M. McGilchrist, Spokane, Wash.
The death of Millar McGilchrist is the third to occur in the McGilchrist family in the last seven weeks. His mother died October 28 and his brother, George, on September 30. While attending Willamette university McGilchrist was employed part time in a local furniture store. He also taught some classes at the university.
