OBITUARY:
HAS CROSSED PLAINS; Pioneer of 1840 and Last Survivor of Missionary Ship Lausanne. Mrs. Helen C. McClane died at the residence of her son, L. B. McClane on Water street, at 1:10 o’clock this morning, from the result of an acute attack of erysipelas. She was taken suddenly ill last Friday, and last Sunday the doctor announced that there was little hope, and her children were all summoned to her bedside. The end came very suddenly and was hardly expected last night. Mrs. McClane was one of the earliest pioneers of Oregon, having come to this country in 1840. She is the last survivor of those who came to Oregon on the missionary ship Lausanne, which landed at Astoria in the spring of 1840. She was born in Otsego county, New York, April 14, 1834. After their arrival in Oregon they first settled at the mission below Salem, soon afterward moving to this city, where she lived the remainder of her life. Her father built the house in 1841, which is the oldest now standing in the city, which is now occupied by Judge R. P. Boise. In 1843 she was married to the late JH. B. McClane. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal church in this city, and was a charter member of the Oregon Pioneer Society. About five years ago she was thrown from a buggy and has ever since been paralyzed on the left side. Last summer she suffered another fall and since that time was very weakly. She spent the past summer in Tillamook county with her son, C. H. McClane. Deceased leaves one daughter, Mrs. J. H. McCormick, of Salem, and six sons, G. F. McClane, Portland, L. B. McClane, James L. McClane and John B. McClane, of Salem. O. H. McClane, Grand Ronde, and Harold G. McClane, Portland. The funeral services will probably be held some time next Friday, but definite arrangements will be announced later. Oregon Statesman 1 October 1903 5:4
