MELSON - In Salem, Oregon, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. H. Wison, corner of State and 18th Sts., at 6:20 a.m., Monday November 4, 1895, Juliann E. C. Melson, aged 70 years, 11 months and 28 days. The funeral was held at the residence, Tuesday, November 5, at 2 p.m., the services being conducted by Rev. G. W. Grannis of the M. E. chruch, her pastor. His remarks were were beautiful and impressive. The remains were laid to rest beside her husband in the I. O. O. F. cemetery, Rev. Mr. Bowersox, formerly pastor of one of the daughters, offering a short prayer.
Deceased was born in Kentucky, on the 6th of November, 1824. She was married January 28, 1841, to Samson Davis Melson, who died in this city January 1, 1894. She and her husband, with their family, crossed the plains, coming to Oregon in 1864, taking up their residence in Marion county; and about twenty-eight years ago they located in Salem, residing here continuously thereafter.
The Lord blessed their union, entrusting to them, the care of eleven precious souls; and, although they did not possess wealth, theirs was a happy home where love and truth abided, and the law, "Bear one another's burdens," was fully exemplified in the daily home life. "Better a little with righteousnesss, than great revenue without right."
Mrs. Melson became a Christian in early girlhood, and joined the Methodist church, in which she continued a faithful and consisten member to the end. "Remmeber thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, mor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them."
During the seven years immediately preceeding her death, Mrs. Melson was confined to her bed and helpless, by reason of paralysis; and a greater part of the time she in an intense sufferer, but her confidence Heavenly Father remained unshaken to the last. "Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation; continuing in instant in prayer;" for "Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivereth them out of them all." "As God and angels look down upon the silent history of that woman's administration, nothing external, no outward development of kingdoms, mot empire-building can compare with what she has done." "Nothing can compare to the silent work in obscure dwellings, of faithful women bringing their children to honor an virtue and piety." Nothing that she could do for her children was ever too hard. And they, brought up "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord," cheerfully obeyed teh command, "Honor thy father and they mother;" and during their mother's long and painful illness, faithfully, and uncomplainingly and unitedly performed their duty. "I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen this righteous forsaken, nor thier seed found begging bread." With them it was purely a labor of love. "He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. For their devotion to the one who gave them life, a jewel, has been placed in the crown which awaits them. And, of each daighter, it can be truly said: "She hath done what she could."
The children surviving her, are Mrs. J. H. Wilson, Mrs. T. H. Wilson, Mrs. T. L. Davidson, Mrs. Ella B. McDowell, of Salem; Mrs. L. B. Plants, of Milton; Mrs. S. P. Garrigues, of Heppner, and J. Ashbury Melson, of Salem.
