OBITUARY: 

ROY MELSON SUCCUMBS TO LONG ILLNESS 
Roy S. Melson, 71, former Marion County commissioner and long active in business circles of the area, died Sunday night at a Salem hospital after a long illness. His home was at 440 N. River Rd. 
Melson served as county commissioner from 1932 to 1940. Prior to that he was prominently identified with the book store business in Salem. He was in partnership for a time with A. A. Gueffroy in the Commercial Book store and later was a partner in construction of the Atlas book firm, now Needham’s. 
A resident of the Salem area for about 65 years, Melson was born at Heppner, Ore., Dec. 19, 1883. He moved to this sector with his parents when a boy of six and was a 1912 graduate of Willamette Law School. He was married to the former Etta Welch here in 1913 and she survives him.

ROY MELSON FUNERAL DUE ON WEDNESDAY 
Roy S. Melson, 71, who died here Sunday night, was long active in Salem business affairs and was a former Marion County commissioner, serving in this capacity for eight years. 
After graduation from Willamette Law School in 1912, Melson served for approximately 10 years with the old Capital National Bank before going into the book store field. In retirement for the past 16 years, he had operated a farm in the Keizer area up to his illness and developed the Greenwood addition in that sector. 
He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 4, AF & AM, the Elks and Keizer Community Church. Surviving in addition to the widow are two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Franz and Mrs. Ruth Hill, both of Salem; sons, David l. Melson, Salem, and Comm. Lewis B. Melson, U.S. Navy; sister, Mrs. Etta Harris, Salem; niece, Mrs. June Simmons, Portland, nephews, Robert Eyre, Santa Barbara, Calif., and Ralph Eyre, Salem, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Clough-Barrick Chapel Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Robert Goertz will officiate and interment will follow at Pioneer Cemetery.
