OBITUARY:
MELSON - At the family residence on the southeast corner of State and 13th street, at 3 p.m., Monday, January 1, 1894, Samson Davis Melson, aged 76 years, 2 months, and 6 days.
The deceased had been ailing for a few days past with heart trouble and had been cautioned by the attending physician to remain quiet and keep to his bed for some time. Yesterday afternoon he expressed a desire to sit up for the purpose of being shaved. He was assisted to a chair and shortly afterwards complained of a distressing feeling. Immediately he was returned to his bed but death had laid claim to him and in a few minutes life was extinct. During Mr. Melson's last moments his suffering was terrible.
In the state of Maryland on October 26, 1817, Samson Davis Melson first saw the light of day. His childhood days were spent in that section and upon arriving at the age of 19 moved to Missouri. At the age of 23 and on Jan. 28, 1841, he and Juliann E. C. Jones were united in matrimony. In 1864 the family started across the plains to Oregon. They came direct to Marion county and have resided in and about Salem ever since. Mr. Melson was the father of eleven children, eight of whom are living -- Mrs. Ella B. McDowell now in New York attending a conservatory of music, Mrs. S. P. Garrigues, Mrs. T. L. Davidson, Mrs. T. H. Wilson, Mrs. J. H. Wilson of Salem, Mrs. L. B. Plants of Milton, Umatilla county, and two sons, Jas. A. of this city, and Benjamin. His wife and twelve grandchildren also are left to mourn his loss. The time for the funeral has not yet been decided on.
