"My eldest one, Virgilia, is here living on a nice farm, a suburban residence which overlooks all Salem. They have three children - one son and two daughters living. Their names are Velleda, Clara and Hamlin Smith. They buried three daughters and one son." Letter from Pherne Brown Pringle to Tabitha Ella Brown, in BROWN FAMILY HISTORY II, p. 208

OBITUARY: 
DIED--One mile south of Salem, on Friday, the 3d inst., at 6 a.m., Virgillia, wife of F. R. Smith, aged 45 years. The deceased had been in gradually failing health for a month previous. She was an exemplary Christian, a devoted wife and mother and a good neighbor. Her aged parents, Mr. And Mrs. Pringle, are well known as among the pioneers of Oregon. The funeral will take place from the family residence, on Sunday morning at 10 oc'clock. Friends of the family are invited to attend.

Virgilia, wife of F. R. Smith, living one mile south of Salem, died on Friday, the 3d inst., at 6 o'clock A.M., aged 48 years. The deceased had been in gradual failing health for a month previous. She was an exemplary Christian, a devoted wife and mother, and a good neighbor. Her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pringle, are well known as amongh the pioneers of Oregon.
