PIONEER IS LAID AT REST.
J. M. MUNKERS WHO CROSSED PLAINS IN 1846, BURIED AT SALEM
Salem, Or. July 19 - The funeral of J. M. Munkers; a pioneer of 1846 who died at Newport Sunday, was held here today, the interment being in Odd Fellows cemetery. Mr. Munkers was born in 1841 in Platte co., Mo, and crossed the plains with his parents when he was (?) years old. The family took up a donation land claim near Salem, where Mr. Munkers lived until 1901, when he moved to Jackson county. He went to Brownsville to live in 1910, his home being there at the time of his death.
Mr. Munkers is survived by his widow, who before marriage was Miss Romelia G. Gesner, daughter of R. A. Gesner, a pioneer of 1845; three daughters, Mrs. Lula Marquam, and Mrs. Minnie Cox of Portland and Miss Josie Cox of Brownsville, two sons, Jerry and Gordon Munkers of Brownsville; two sisters, one of whom is Mrs. M.E. Estes of Salem, and a brother Benjamin Munkers of Scio.

Died at Newport, Oregon, July 18, 1915, J.M. Munkers, of a complication of diseases, at the age of 75. J.M. Munkers was born in Platte County, Missouri, December 24, 1840. When 5 years of age his parents crossed the plains in and settled on a donation claim 3 miles southeast of Salem where the deceased lived until 1901 when he moved to Ashland, Jackson County, where he resided until 1910 when he removed to Brownsville, Linn County, where he resided at the time of his death. He is survived by his widow Romella Gesner Munkers, a daughter of R.A. Gesner, a pioneer of 1845. Two daughters, Mrs Lulu Marquam and Mrs Minnie Cox, of Portland, and Jerry, Gordon and Josephine, all of Brownsville, a sister Mrs L.E. Estes of Salem, and a brother Benjamin Munkers of Scio. Mr Munkers was a devout Christian and a member of the Congregational denomination. He was a kind husband and father and a good citizen, always taking an active interest in matters of public concern.
