Jul 1843 in Missouri, is enumerated with his wife of 20 years, Mary A., age 39, mother of 5 children 2 of whom are living at the time of the census, b. Oct 1860 in Illinois, along with Roy S., age 16, b. Dec 1883 in Oregon, and Ella M., age 13, b. Apr 1887 in Oregon.

OBITUARY: 
MELSON - In this city at his home 541 17th street, March 18, 1906, James A. Melson, pioneer of 186[?].
Mr. Melson was born at Shelbyville, Mo., July 3, 1843, and leaves a wife and two children, besides five sisters, three of whom were with him when he died. His sisters are Mrs. M. J. Wilson and Miss Emma Plants, of this city; Mrs. Ella McDoweel, of San Jose, Cal.; Mrs. T. H. Wilson of Palo Alto, Cal., and Mrs. S. P. Garrigue, of Heppner.
Mr. Melson's death was sudden and unexpected, as he was on the streets attending to his work up to the close of last week.
After spending an unusually pleasant day with his family Sunday, at 10 o'clock p.m., he had a stroke of paralysis and before mroning had lost the power of speech. Although concious to the end and able to some extent to make his wishes known, he could not speak.
The funeral wil occur at the residence at 2 p.m. today. Interment in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Rev. W. H. Selleck, of the M. E. church, will officiate.
