MISS NEWTON'S FUNERAL.
The remains of Miss Grace Newton, whose demise occurred in Butte, Montana, on Saturday last, are expected in this city by the Roseburg mail at 11 o'clock this morning. If they arrive, the funeral will occur at 2:30 o'clock from the residence of her sister, Miss Augusta Newton, at No. 3 Church street. Rev. Wm. Mingnan, of St. Paul's Episcopal church will conduct the services. The members of Salem Rebekah Lodge No. 1, I.O.O.F., are expected to attend the funeral in a body. Interment will occur in Rural cemetery. Oregon Statesman 17 Nov 1896 8:4

The remains of Miss Grace Newton arrived from Butte City yesterday afternoon, where she had been employed as bookkeeper for a mining company, when her health failed and she died of that dreaded disease consumption. Miss Newton passed quietly away after being confined to her bed for less than a week. Away from home, but not friendless, she received the best possible attention and medical aid. The remains were accompanied here by Mrs. Holt Edmondson, formerly a resident of Salem, but now of Butte City, arriving here after vexatious delays on account of washouts and high water.
The funeral services took place at the family home on Church street, conducted by the Rev. Magnan, of the Episcopalian church, of which she was a member.
After a very able and impressive sermon the remains were taken to the Odd Fellows Cemetery and placed in the family lot, by the side of her brothers and sister, six of which preceded her. She leaves a mother and father, three brothers and a sister to mourn her, besides a large circle of friends and acquaintances who only knew her to love her.
Miss Newton was bright, energetic and lovable and processed a kind a sympathetic heart. Her hand and heart were open to all her friends. The deceased was amiable and accomplished and had a large circle of friends in Butte City.
