1900 OR CENSUS - Sam E. Hitchens, age 36, single, occupation barber, b. Jul 1872 in Wisconsin.
DISCREPANCY - Obit [1901] gives birth year as 1861, but gives his age as 30; 1900 census record gives his middle initial as J., obit as E.

OBITUARY: 
At the family home, corner High and Union streets, Salem, Oregon, Sunday, November 17, 1901, Samuel J. Hitchens, aged 30 years.
Deceased was a barber, and followed his profession in Portland until last spring, when, on account of some stomach trouble, he became incapacitated. The physicians gave him up, and he came home to die last May, lingering until last Sunday, when he passed away as indicated above. Deceased was born at Mineral Point, Wis., July 8, 1861 [1871?]. He was a brother of Mrs. Wm Staiger of this city. The funeral will be held from the family home, northwest corner High and Union streets, this (Thursday) afternoon, at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be had in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
