OBITUARY:
PERKINS, ALVIN CLYDE
The Statesman yesterday received the following letter and resolutions from Manila, under date of November 23, 1898, and which are self-explanatory, as given here:
Editor Statesman: The first death in company K, Second Oregon United States volunteers, occurred at the hospital early yesterday morning. Private Clyde Perkins, son of A. G. Perkins, of Brooks, Oregon, died of smallpox. I send you herewith an honest expression of the sentiment of his comrades concerning him, with a request from his company that you publish it. Truly he was patient and dutiful - a good soldier. Most respectfully yours,
(signed) M’Nail Howell.
The following are the resolutions:
Whereas, Our Heavenly Father has taken from us our friend and comrade, Private Clyde Perkins [yester]day departed this life at Manila, Luzon; and
Whereas, He had the entire respect and friendship of the soldiers in company K, Second Oregon United States volunteers, who mourn his death; therefore be it
Resolved, That it is the unanimous sense of the officers and enlisted men of said company K, Second Oregon United States volunteers, of which company he was a member, that in his death we lose a comrade and a cherished friend, and America loses a dutiful soldier, and a citizen who dared to face the dangers and hardships of war for her glory, honor and defense. And be it further
Resolved, That we, the members of said company K, do hereby extend to the father and mother, the brothers, and sisters, and friends of our deceased comrade our sincere sympathy in this, their bereavement, commending all to the same kind Providence and benevolent Father that has seen fit to take him from us, believing that ‘all things work together for good to them that love God.’
(Signed) Hal G. Hibbard, J. J. Thurston, McNail Howell, committee. Headquarters Company K, Second Oregon United States volunteers, Manila, Luzon, November 22, 1898.
