OBITUARY - Hon. C. M. Pershbaker, deceased, Senator from Douglas, Coos and Curry counties, was a resident of Coos county, an active man in business being engaged in mercantile and mining operations for some eight years past, during which time he has resided in that county. He was unmarried, about forty-five years of age, and was possessed of considerable property. He was of German origin, born in America; much respected for his honesty, business qualifications and worth as a citizen. He was quiet and unassuming in deportment and never an active politician, though an earnest Republican. THE FUNERAL -- Yesterday forenoon, at the appointed hour, the members and officers of the Legislative Assembly formed in procession in front of the State House, and preceded by the band, marched to the residence of the deceased Senator, Hon. C. M. Pershbaker. From hence the bier was escorted to the Congregational Church, and carried in through open ranks. The services at the Church commenced with singing "Our Beautiful Home: by members of the Salem Musical Union, after which prayer was offered and then a discourse by Rev. P. S. Knight. The speaker took no ___, but selected as a topic the immortality of the soul. After a few appropriate remarks on the occasion, he gave a very forcible and clear argument in favor of eternal life. The exercises were concluded by singing "If life's prospects charm thee," when the coffin was borne through open ranks as before, and placed in the hearse. The procession then formed according to the printed programme and marched to the cemetery, the band playing "The dead march in Saul." The procession and order of all the movements called out favorable remarks from the bystanders, and the marshals received merited compliment for their manner of conducting the ceremonies of the occasion.
