OBITUARY:
FELL OFF THE WHARF.
W. C. Pettyjohn the Victim of a Painful Accident. In leaving the O.R. & N. dock last night, W. C. Pettyjohn, of Hall’s Ferry, accidentally walked off the wharf of that company, and falling some twelve feet, struck on a large boulder, and so badly shattered his right leg that it is doubtful if he will ever have the complete use of it again.
He had just emerged from the office and the light from the window was reflected in such a manner that it had the effect of deceiving Mr. Pettyjohn, who mistook the reflected rays for the sidewalk, and caused his fall. The accident itself might have been far less serious in its consequences had he not struck the rock, as the water at that place was waist deep. To a Journal reporter he said today that immediately after the drop he did not realize any pain, his first impression being that he had been impaled on a sharp rod of iron, and it was this thought that prompted him to tell Agent Powers, who had asked him while yet in the water if he had suffered serious injury, that he was not hurt but was unable to extricate himself. Mr. Pettyjohn is now at the home of his sister, Mrs. Crump, whose residence is over the Red Front drugstore. He bears his pain, which is excruciating at times, with the greatest fortitude, and is as cheerful as it is possible for a brave man to be under his trial.
THE AMPUTATION
After a consultation held at 1 o’clock this afternoon, it was decided that amputation would be necessary, as the bone was broken in a manner that absolutely precluded anything but the most severe treatment. A successful operation was performed by Drs. Smith & Byrd about 2 o’clock and the patient is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances.
