OBITUARY:
THE DEATH RECORD.
Mrs. L. E. Pratt, after a brief illness, died at her home in this city at 6:15 a.m. yesterday March 16, 1891 in her 67th year. Deceased was born in Dalton, Massachusetts, on the 5th day of May, 1825, her maiden name being Lawrence. On New Year’s day of 1844 she formed a life partnership with L. E. Pratt, and the issue of this marriage was three children, all of whom are living; Mrs. J. H. Haas and Mrs. F. J. Babcock, of Salem, and Wm. E. Pratt of Oregon City.
Captain and Mrs. Pratt moved to Oregon in 1857, coming direct to Salem, where they located and in the year following built the residence, situated on Liberty and Marion streets, residing there continuously. Mr. Pratt’s purpose in coming to Salem was to found and place in operation the first woolen mill. It was situated in North Salem and a number of years ago was burned. Mrs. Pratt was a member of the Congregational church and was an untiring worker with that denomination in this city. Her name was one of the first to be placed on the roll of membership.
On Saturday, the 7th inst., Mrs. Pratt was taken with pleurisy, which afterwards turned into pneumonia, and she gradually grew worse until death came to her relief. Mr. Pratt is quite ill with pneumonia, having been stricken down a few days previous to his wife’s illness, and the bereavement occasioned by her death makes it doubly sad to the family’s large number of friends in this city and county.
