FRANCES M. PUTMAN DEAD
Pioneer of 1852 Succumbs at Hospital After Operation
Frances M. Putman, a pioneer of 1852, died after an operation at the Good Samaritan Hospital yesterday. Cancer of the stomach was the cause. She leaves a great number of friends and relatives in every portion of the state. She was born in Iowa on May 18, 1847, and her maiden name was Frances Johnson. When she was 3 years old the family started for Salt Lake in prairie schooners and arrived in that city after five months on the road. The party rented for a few months and then set out for California. They lived there for two years and in the fall of 1852 went to Douglas County, Or. In 1854 they settled in Salem and in that town she became the second wife of John Hendershot in December 1875 [sic - Yamhill Co., 1874]. Mr. Hendershot died in 1880 and the widow left Salem and came to Portland. Two years later she married J. R. Putman, of Goldendale, Wash., and resided in that city until taken ill recently.
Besides her husband she is survived by four children - Mrs. J. S. Kingsley and Mrs. J. S. Hutchinson, of Portland; Parvin and Orville Hendershot, of Seattle; two brothers, D. A. and George Johnson, of Goldendale, and a sister, Mrs. J. M. Long, of Salem.
The funeral will be held tomorrow from Erickson's undertaking establishment, but the place of interment has not yet been decided upon.
