OBITUARY: 

REMINGTON -- James A. Remington, one of three early Salem residents who inaugurated the first rural mail service from the Salem Post Office died Friday night at his home here, 2186 Chemeketa St. NE. He was 74. Funeral sevices will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Barrick chapel with Rev. Gordon Jaffe and Rev. Daniel Brose officiating. Interment will be at Pioneer Cemetery. Remington, along with James Albert and Alonzo Fisher set the rural mail service in motion here April 1, 1901. Remington continued the service until his retirement in 1934.
Death followed a brief illness for Remington, who was born Dec. 22, 1872 in Mehaska County, Iowa. He came to the Salem area with his parents, Thompson and Elizabeth Remington. He married Gertrude C. Purvine here in 1897 and they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary before her death in 1958. Remington was a member of the First Evangelical United Brethren Church and had formerly been active in Sons of Union Veterans. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Pauline Cohen, Salem; a son J. Fred Remington, Portland, granddaughters, Mrs. Don (Joan) Beecroft, Salem; Misses Janice and Judith Remington, both Portland and a grandson, Albert Cohen, Portland.
