OBITUARY:
CHRIS. RICH DROWNED.
Went Down in the Willamette While Bathing Sunday Afternoon.
Yesterday about 3:30 o'clock Christin Rich went bathing in the Willamette with his friend H. Grossenbacher. The place where the boys went in was at the head of McClane's island below the mouth of North Mill creek, and it is said to be a dangerous place. Young Rich was not a good swimmer, and as he went along the shallow water all of a sudden went down. His friend got hold of his hand and struggled to save him, nearly losing his own life in the attempt, but with no avail. Grassenburger says he doesn't know how he reached the shore, and he was unable to call assistance for some moments thereafter. The body was recovered within half an hour, and taken to the home of Rich's parents, who live on "D" street in Parrish's addition, and are almost heart-broken over their misfortune.
Christ Rich drove delivery wagon for Gilbert & Patterson for about three years, and served nearly one year as deputy under Sheriff Croisan, having lately resumed his former position. He was 24 years of age, a steady young man and a faithful worker. The deceased had an accident policy of $2,000, besides a life policy in the Northwestern, but the writer could not learn for what amount.

DROWNED IN THE WILLAMETTE.
Christ Rich Met Sudden Death While in Bathing in the River Sunday Afternoon.
Christ Rich, a young Frenchman of this city, was accidentally drowned in the Willamette river near McClane’s island last Sunday evening about 5:30 o’clock. He and a number of young companions were out in the river swimming at the time the accident happened and it is not known whether he was taken with cramps or got beyond his depth. The water is very swift at this point and it would be an easy matter for one to meet a watery grave. One of the swimmers who happened to be near tried to save him but came near losing his own life in doing so. The body sank beneath the surface and it was fully forty minutes before it was found by the searchers. Medical aid was summoned and everything possible was done to resuscitate him but every effort proved fruitless and the body was removed to the home of the boy’s parents on D. street in North Salem.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon, the interment being conducted in Rural cemetery by Co. B. Second regiment, O.N.G. The procession started from the German Baptist church, where Rev. Robert Whitaker delivered a sermon. John Rich, uncle of the deceased preached a sermon in German, French and also in English. The funeral sermon will be preached next Sunday morning at the German Baptist church at 11 o’clock. The unfortunate young man was employed as driver of the delivery wagon of Gilbert & Patterson and prior to that he had been deputy under Sheriff Croisan. He was an honest and hard-working young fellow who has many friends to mourn with his relatives.
He leaves besides his father, Abraham, and his step-mother, two sisters who reside in this city. They are Lydia Rich and Mrs. Annie Cartier. He also has a sister, Mrs. Magdalene Muhleman, living at Independence. Silas and Samuel, his brothers, live here, as do his uncles, Peter and Joseph Graber. Christ was born in France twenty-four years ago and had been in America six years. He had an insurance policy of $1000 with the Northwest.
